Meet the Authors Session

Featuring: Mr. Scott Weighart, Northeastern University
Scott Weighart, author of Find Your First Professional Joband Exceeding Expectations: Mastering the Seven Keys To Professional Success, recently announced the publication of his new book, entitled Learning From Experience: A Resource Book for Co-op/Internship Professionals.  This 416-page book was created specifically for educators who work in co-op/internship programs, though there is also much valuable information for career services professionals as well.  The book was funded in part by a CEIA Research Grant.  Basically, Weighart interviewed 17 experts from around the US and Canada, asking them to weigh in on numerous crucial topics facing co-op/internship educators.

Featuring: Mr. Thami Msubo, Tata Steel South Africa
New Perspectives in People Management addresses people management challenges faced by the private and public sectors in the 21st century. It is a practical account that provides the cutting-edge new HR agenda for business and public sector leaders. It focuses on building strategic partnerships and the creation of value using innovation in modern day organizations.
The difference between this book and other Human Resources (HR) Management books is that it places less emphasis on HR processes and practices.
This book addresses the question of innovation which is applicable in the industry and public sector. Public sector programs fail because they lack innovation and public servants are not characterized by entrepreneurial ethos. The world’s most admired organizations are those that that have made steady progress toward innovation by exploring the new habits of setting future benchmarks.

Featuring: Dr. Andy Martin, Massey University
How to Make the Most of Work Integrated Learning: A Guide for Students, Lecturers & Supervisors by A Martin and H Hughes represents a valuable resource for all three stakeholder groups involved in cooperative education/work integrated learning (WIL). As the authors point out, WIL is of increasing importance nationally and internationally. There are, however, limited resources available for stakeholders to maximize the benefits of WIL, and no New Zealand based resources. The guide is comprehensive and presented in an engaging manner. The tips about things to do and things to avoid, provides a quick highly useable summary of ways to avoid problems. The Guide is soundly based in research into WIL and amply fulfills its promise of maximizing WIL experiences. The authors are to be congratulated for producing a comprehensive, yet user friendly, resource for WIL stakeholders.
