International co-op placements are different from domestic ones in many ways. There are more variables involved that can adversely affect the outcome for the student, employer and institution. These variables include: distance, foreign regulations, culture, home-sickness, medical emergencies, political unrest and travel costs. Experienced co-op practitioners identified a number of criteria they felt were important to the success of their international co-op programs. The following section will identify those factors and some of the solutions found to work.
